Who do you think is more at fault when the players react? The fans or the players? I think there is blame on both sides when the players react. I think the players should be professional enough and have the ability to not react to heckling fans. At the same time I think the fans feel like they have to power to say whatever they want to these players. This shouldn’t be the case and there has been cases where fans have said terrible things to players. What do you think the NBA should do about these issues? I think the NBA, as a players organization, should stop the heckling and superiority the fans feel during the games. I don’t think it would be over the top for the NBA to suspend fans or make a no swear at players rule. I also think the NBA should find another solution other than suspending players for reacting to fans wrongly. Is all of this just part of the game? I think there has been a long history of rough fan to player relationship. The energy and intensity of the game can often times rile up fans and players which can bring volatile situations. This isn’t a good part of the game though. With the hockey fighting example, that tradition has been a vital part of the game but fans heckling players and fighting simply is needed. The only thing it benefits is the headlines.
Ugh I hate this part of sports. I think it’s more about culture and entitlement than sports. Who can sit courtside except the very rich and powerful? Who would feel so entitled to heckle the players who are trying to work except for the rich and powerful? I was immediately drawn to Vassilis Dalakas, chair of the marketing department at California State University at San Marcos, and his idea that “this type of behavior is more normalized.’’ Agreed. Just because people are doing it doesn’t mean it’s cool. Millionaire Drake yelling at Millionaire Perkins is just so boring and ugly.
I don’t know. I just don’t think most hecklers are all that creative. If somehow they are funny and original it might be fine once and a while, but it seems to just be rude. These players want to play basketball not be taunted all night. And the idea that they are rich is really not the point. “Hey, you’re rich so I get to make fun of you” is not really logical reasoning for being obnoxious. That Robin Flicker guy just sounds like a jerk who is enjoying having his 15 minutes of fame: “These guys are earning a lot of money. They should be able to deal with fans that are trying to get a vicarious thrill by being there and making noise. The league needs to educate some of the players and I think role play is the way to do it.’’ So Robin Flicker is in charge of player education for the NBA? The rich are protected in everything else in America so protect Lebron James from losers with plastic megaphones who think they are funny. That guy is not just annoying Michael Jordan; he is annoying the entire crowd around him. What gives him the right? He is rich enough to sit next to them is all. I think the no one should know his name and the NBA should remove him from games. Players are human beings. They are objects to the teams and the league and they shouldn’t be objects to the fans.
People try to be quiet in movies so people can enjoy the show. If I was at the game, I’d want to concentrate on what the player’s are doing. I don’t want to listen to some rich jerk heckle players. They signed up to play a game. I’m all for the idea of a barrier being built. I’d never actually thought about it. When I went to a Patriots game there was a clear system for texting the whereabouts of a rude or drink fan because the millionaire season ticket holder should be able to enjoy a kid-friendly atmosphere along the sidelines. That seemed civilized to me.
Who do you think is more at fault when the players react? The fans or the players? I think both players and fans are at fault when players react to heckling comments. Part of me believes that at games the fans should be respectful, and if they have a problem doing so they could be removed from the game. They should not have the authority to say whatever they please at these games. The other part of me agrees with the author in the article when stating that these players get paid a lot of money, and they should be able to deal with these disrupting comments from fans in a professional manner.
What do you think the NBA should do about these issues? I think the easiest way for the NBA to resolve these issues would be to ban the players who start the disruptive comments and engage in the taunting of players. The players are the prime people of the game. If the NBA were to remove the heckling fans, the game would still go on and be continued in a better environment/manner.
Is all of this just part of the game? I don't think this is "just part of the game." I would like to think that if I went to a game, I might boo. However, I would never continuously disrupt the people playing in the game with rude, uncivil comments. No one can preform their best when they are distracted, and these players already handle noise to the max.
I honestly believe that both the players and fans are at fault when the players react. Heckling is a part of the sport, and I believe it is the responsibility of the players to be professional and mature enough to not respond to the fans, especially in extreme ways. Rather, I would hope to see them take the heckling as motivation and use the anger to get them fired up and focused for the game ahead of them. On the other hand though, I believe it is completely not okay what some fans have said to players during the game, and that heckling can be taken too far very easily. Fans should be aware that although athletes may seem ‘unreal’, they are still people and have the right to react when something someone says offends them.
I believe that the NBA should certainly bring attention to these issues, but not take it over the top. I believe that if the organization accidentally over exaggerates the situation in any way, many fans and potentially players could be offended/opposed to the statement. For example, my Grandpa thinks that heckling is just a natural part of the game and that it encourages players to work harder out of anger, and that it is his constitutional right to freedom of speech and his ability to say whatever he likes. That statement is certainly overused a lot to get out of situations, but it is a valid comment that people take to heart and consider in their day-to-day lives. But, if they go about it by bringing attention to it and warning fans as well as players that if a situation becomes too much, there will be consequences.
I personally believe that all of this should not be considered just “part of the game” because taunting and making offensive comments at people should never be tolerated or ignored and called ‘normal’. Although some people believe it brings more entertainment to the game, I believe that cannot possibly true because the whole purpose of watching sports is to enjoy the game itself, not the opportunity to heckle/taunt people that comes with it.
I believe that the players are at fault. While fans should be respectful and be removed from the stadium if they are acting too inappropriate, players are being paid to take part in the game and ignore spectators. In order for the players to be protected from verbal abuse from fans, the NBA needs to take certain steps. First of all, there needs to be more security in arenas. This will enable greater control over spectators. While unpopular, another option would be to move the seats back. This would help prevent the players and fans engaging in confrontation, but may take away from the quality of the fans' experience. This leads to the notion that heckling is part of the games. What makes the NBA so unique is that the fans' proximity to the court and involvement with the game. In other words, this is simply an aspect of NBA basketball. This means that greater measures such as increased security need to be taken. Thus, ensuring that both parties behave themselves.
I think that if they players react in such a way it can cause some fans to act badly. After all the fans are there to see the players so if they overreact the fans will follow them. I think that the NBA should make sure that the players understand that fans might overreact to their actions and to keep it to a minimum. In reality there is no preventative action that will work 100% fans and sometimes even players will overreact.
I think that the players are at fault for reacting. While I understand how some fans can be awful and it is a natural reaction to want to defend yourself, I feel that this is a con that comes with the job. Unfortunately, this is something they have to deal with as part of their career and there is not really anything they can do to change that. I think that the NBA should try to regulate players a bit better and keep them from reacting to the fans. This could mean more intervention or even bigger fines/punishment for any altercations. I think that this is just part of the game.
I honestly believe that whoever is at fault depends on the situation. I believe fans should understand that when they are present at a sporting event, they must be respectful of the athletes no matter the outcome of the game. Especially in the case of Westbrook, since he was already in a heated moment, the fan shouldn’t have shoved a phone in his face considering the fact that they were just eliminated from the playoffs and Russell was in a bad mood to begin with. To add onto this, a professional athlete should understand that they are role models to most of the people in the arena they are playing in. They should be professional enough to not engage in mockery from a fan. Overall, I do not think the NBA can do anything to stop words from exchanging between the players and fans but they can put stricter regulations on this issue to make both fans and players think twice before initiating an altercation. I think this aspect of sports will forever be imbedded in the game but the extent of which these fights happen can be altered.
I think the players are at fault. Fans do sometimes say pretty horrible things, but they pay money to watch the game and really are not told they can't say anything. The players are paid millions of dollars to play , and even if someone insults a player it's the players job not to react. I think the NBA should do nothing about this. Like fighting in hockey it brings more attention to the game. It would only hurt the league. I think it is part of the game heckling is part of the game, the same way trash talking is. It's not basketball if the fans are sitting there not aloud to say anything.
I think the players are more at fault when they react to fans because it's the players choice if they react and care about what the fan's saying or not. If they wanted to, they could just ignore the fans. The NBA should discourage fans from interfering in games kind of like how movies discourage the use of phone in theaters. So at the games, they could announce on the big screen to please not interfere with the players. It is part of the game because its natural for fans to love and hate teams, and without the fans, the game wouldn't be the same. If the crowd is electrifying, I think the game is more fun to watch or be at, so the fans being rude and the players responding is all just part of the game.
I think that fans that heckle NBA players are an big issue in the league. Fans interactions to players should be limited to cheering and spectating. Fans that choose to attempt to provoke these athletes are a disgrace to the game and should be disciplined heavily. To start the NBA should ban the player for a certain amount of time and after that I believe it is grounds for permenant removal for all NBA games. I think in most of these disputes it is the fans fault. Basketball players typically mind their on buiseness and focus on winning the game rather than try and start conflict with fans. When these fans are saying hurful things to these players about them or their family it could be extremely difficult to resist talking back.
I think that it ultimately comes down to the players fault when they react to some of the stuff the fans say. I only say that it is the fault of the players because at this high of a level it is their responsibility to keep themselves composed and it is also part of the whole home field advantage. However, I do have sympathy for players who do respond to the vulgar things that fans say to them.
I think that there should be some limitations that the NBA can put on what fans do/say and add possible fines as a consequence.
Is it part of the game because in the NFL and the NBA when a player is getting drafted a large characteristic people look at is the player's level of maturity and ability to keep his name clean on and off the field/court.
This issue is 100% on the fans that taunt the players. In an NBA game the emotions and adrenaline are at all times high and when a fan disrupts the focus of the game players have no choice but to retaliate. Also athletes are humans too and they should be treated as so.
The NBA should do everything in its power to protect its players from unnecessary distracting and unfair treatment. It hurts the level of play if platers have to worry about their safety and well being along with other distractions.
This should not be a part of basketball. It distracts from the actual of game of basketball and has no part in today's NBA
I think that the players are more at fault when they respond to heckling from the side lines. Being a sports players, not to mention a professional in the NBA, fans will always be talking and trying to interact with the players. People need to understand that fans always try to get in the heads of the opposing team. I don't think that fans should receive punishment unless a fan disrupts the game and need to get thrown out of the arena like streakers. Other than that, I believe that players should be fined because players shouldn't harm the fans as the fans are the biggest supporters of the NBA. I think at the end of the day, heckling is just a part of the game. You can't do much about it and athletes should understand that things like that will always happen.
I think that when players retaliate to fans it is their fault. They have the choice to not give in to the fans who are obviously trying to get in their heads. As we know there is definitely home court advantage, and the fans take advantage of it. Their objective is to get a reaction out of the players, and when the players say something back they have completed their goal. I don't think there is anything that the NBA can do because this is gonna happen at all arenas. Yes I believe that there will always be heckling. Its a way the fans get to interact with the players. If the NBA wants to do anything, they should fine the players more. The NBA gets its revenue because of the fans, and if the NBA made rules for heckling there will be a decrease in viewership.
I think it is the players fault when they react to fans who are in the stands. They are professional players and should know how not to respond to fans saying stuff. Home court has huge advantages on the game and the fanes take advantage of this. I think the NBA does need to do something about these issues. If they start kicking people out when they yell bad language. From high school sports to professional sports they is always parents yelling and interrupting the game. It's all part of the game and people will just have to deal with it.
I personally believe that the players should not interact at all with the fans. Trash talking has been a part of sports forever, and the players must learn to deal with these criticisms. First of all, heckling is a lot of fun, and a ban on it would definitely anger the fans. When players are out there, they must understand that playing a professional sport comes with hecklers, and is one of the reasons home court advantage is such an 'advantage'. It is inappropriate in high school games, and in my opinion even college games, but if this is your job, and you are getting payed to do this, you must be ready for some criticism.
I believe the fans are at fault when the players react . The fans are usually the ones instigating the argument or taunting, so they should be the ones to suffer consequences. When a fan goes to an NBA game, they are in the building of an organization that demands respect. Just because these fans do not give respect to the players and their organization, does not mean the players should be punished. Drake for example, should have nothing to do with the players, but he taunts them instead. This lack of respect should result in either a cash fine or removal from the stadium. If fans cannot behave themselves, this is their own fault and they should be punished for this. This is not just part of the game because the fans have no part in the game. If it were players taunting or fighting each other then this would be “part of the game” and they would be fined or ejected. The only way to keep the crowd under control and away from the players is to add consequences for such actions.
